CMC-China 2026, SynBio floor, medical cosmetics: collagen sellers now pitch the matrix, where Sculptra already sits as a Class III implant
Field notes from Hall C at CMC-China 2026 in Suzhou. Chinese collagen and synbio suppliers are selling the extracellular matrix and the delivery format rather than the active, and the Class III registration line, not the ingredient, is where the margin now sits.
Hall B sells the therapy, Hall C sells the matrix

SUZHOU, 4–5 Sep 2026. Walk into Hall B at CMC-China and you get cell and gene therapy (CGT) and business development (BD). Walk into Hall C and you get extracellular matrix (ECM), freeze-dried beads, and fusion proteins. Same expo. Different product.
That is the split a Galderma, AbbVie, Merz, or HTL person should actually use.
Restore the matrix, restore the face: a story Sculptra already sells
Hongbo (Changzhou) Biological’s Chi Bo put a “biomimetic ECM honeycomb gel” on screen and hung it on a 2025 Cell review. The paper exists. Kroemer’s group added extracellular-matrix change to the hallmarks of aging in April 2025. The commercial jump on the slide is older than the citation: restore the matrix, restore the face. Sculptra already runs that play as a Class III poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) implant. Hall C is trying to tell the same story from a manufacturing booth.
LivingPHOENIX and the five Class III certificates
Chengdu LivingPHOENIX (POGMENT / 如凤凰) went further. Founder-CTO Tan Xingjiong lined up three columns: animal-extracted collagen (helix, virus and immunogenicity risk), gene-recombinant collagen (scale, weak helix and hydroxylation), and his “third-generation” biomimetic triple helix. Lutolf and Hubbell were in the footer. “World’s first” was on the title slide. China’s injectable recombinant collagen market, as of late 2025, held five Class III registration certificates, per a CITIC count: Jinbo three, Giant Biogene one, Chuangjian one (its first crosslinked implant). On this reading, helix structure is now a registration question.
Later slides in the same LivingPHOENIX deck set out the stack. The IP slide is corn to glucose to liquid-phase chemical synthesis of a triple-helix mimetic, then an ECM scaffold. Twelve patent filings, four Chinese grants, six PCT. A market slide puts Allergan and CollPlant in a “giants switching track” column, and Glaukos / Stuart Therapeutics under collagen as drug / ophthalmology. The RMB 6.778bn 2030 ECM figure is a Leadleo forecast on the slide.
Mussel proteins and microspheres: the same move from the ingredient side
Shanghai DOJU Biotech’s Han Xingguo sold MUSSEL-SOD, a recombinant mussel-protein / superoxide dismutase (SOD) fusion, into “nearly 2,000” medical-beauty and skin sites. That number is the company’s. Recombinant mussel protein already sits in a cosmetic new-ingredient file and in Class II wound gels. Adhesion protein, two boxes.
The Meixinqiu liquid-nitrogen microsphere talk was the margin argument in one flowchart. Synbio actives (ergothioneine, ectoine) fall into a price war. Nano-encapsulation and lyophilized beads are the escape. The 2026 group standard for that “essence” format excludes drugs and devices. Delivery is where they want the money. The SKU is still a cosmetic.
